The contractor agreement for Vimpeli sports hall was signed just under a year after the old hall burned down. The new hall will be built by Jake Rakennus. The new hall will serve athletes even better than before.

– This is a really big day for us, even symbolically. If you think about it, about a year ago the situation here in Vimpeli was quite serious when the old sports hall burned down. For many local residents, given that we are a sports municipality, it was a spiritual home. Many spent almost more time there than in their own homes. When the hall burned down, the mood was serious. We knew that a big project lay ahead. In the public sector, bureaucracy takes its time before things can properly get underway. After the tendering process, Jake Rakennus Oy was selected as the builder, recalled Municipal Manager Sam Leijonanmieli, summarizing the phases of Vimpeli’s sports hall project at a press conference held in the council chamber on June 5.

– We have heard a lot of good things about Jake’s operations from our partners. We also went to look at reference sites, including the Lappajärvi sports hall, which we were very pleased with. We wanted to hold the signing event on site because this is a symbolically important moment for us – not just an electronic contract, but a concrete start to a project that has been eagerly awaited. I was already joking that once the signatures are on paper, we will head to the construction site and start building. That is pretty much how it works in practice, Sam Leijonanmieli adds.

– This is an important and interesting project for Jake as well. Our strengths lie in turnkey construction (EPC-Contract) and industrial construction, but public projects are also a significant part of our operations. Currently, we have two major school projects underway, in Vaasa and Pietarsaari, said Johan Asplund, CEO of Jake Rakennus Oy.

Municipal Manager Sam Leijonamieli and CEO Johan Asplund broke ground to mark the start of the new construction site on Friday, June 5, 2026.

In Vimpeli, sports are a significant part of everyday life. Vimpeli has two teams at the national championship level, which is exceptional for such a small municipality. In addition, there are about 18 junior teams. A Finnish Championship bronze medal was achieved in basketball, and Finnish baseball (pesäpallo) is naturally a major part of the activities. After the old hall was destroyed, training had to be reorganized, partly in neighboring municipalities.

The new hall will be even longer, accommodating a 60-meter running track inside. The sports hall will be larger, the gym facilities will be improved, and there will be more dressing rooms. In addition, there will be a multipurpose space that enables simultaneous training for multiple sports.
